Is Something Else Making Weight Loss Harder for You?
If you’ve done everything right — reduced calories, exercised consistently, tried different diets — and still can’t lose weight or keep it off, your body may be working against you in ways a scale can’t show you.
Thyroid dysfunction, insulin resistance, hormonal imbalances, and chronic inflammation can all suppress the body’s ability to lose fat, regardless of how disciplined you are with diet and exercise. These aren’t excuses — they’re medical realities. And they’re exactly what a clinical weight loss evaluation is designed to find.
Why Medically Supervised Weight Loss Works
Self-directed dieting relies on general rules applied to a general population. Medically supervised weight loss starts with you specifically — your labs, your health history, your metabolism, your hormones. The result is a plan that targets what’s actually in the way rather than one that assumes the problem is simply eating too much.
At Innovative Medicine, we’ve helped patients in the Lafayette area lose weight after years of frustration — not because we have a magic formula, but because we find the reasons other approaches weren’t working and address them directly.
What the Program Includes
Your program begins with a full health assessment. Blood work evaluates thyroid function, insulin sensitivity, hormonal levels, nutrient status, and metabolic markers. This gives us a clinical picture of what's contributing to your weight challenges and rules out conditions that standard dieting can't address.
For patients who need additional support, prescription medications can help regulate appetite, support metabolic function, or reduce fat accumulation. These are not shortcuts — they are clinically monitored tools used to correct biological obstacles. All medications are reviewed at regular intervals and adjusted based on your response.
Our dedicated weight loss counselors work with you on meal planning, behavioral patterns, and long-term lifestyle strategies. This isn't generic nutrition advice — it's personalized guidance based on your health profile, preferences, and goals.
Progress is tracked through regular appointments that include lab reviews and plan adjustments. This ongoing oversight is one of the most significant differences between clinical programs and self-directed efforts — small course corrections made early prevent plateaus from becoming setbacks.
Conditions That Commonly Interfere With Weight Loss
Many patients come to us having been told their labs are ‘normal’ — yet they continue to struggle with weight. These are some of the most common underlying factors we evaluate and treat:
- Hypothyroidism — Even subclinical thyroid dysfunction can slow metabolism significantly and make fat loss resistant to diet changes.
- Insulin resistance — When cells stop responding efficiently to insulin, the body stores more fat and has a harder time accessing it for energy.
- Hormonal imbalances — Declining estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone can change how your body stores fat. Low estrogen, in particular, promotes abdominal fat accumulation and can make maintaining a healthy weight more challenging.
- Chronic inflammation — Systemic inflammation disrupts metabolic signaling and can create a physiological environment hostile to fat loss.
- Adrenal dysregulation — Chronic stress elevates cortisol, which promotes fat storage — particularly around the abdomen — and suppresses weight loss.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Your first visit includes a thorough health history review and a clinical assessment. We want to understand your full picture — what you've tried, what hasn't worked, and what your day-to-day health looks like.
We order a comprehensive panel and review results with you in detail. You'll understand exactly what the findings mean and how they connect to your weight loss challenges.
Based on your evaluation and labs, we develop a plan that may include dietary guidance, prescription medications, supplement recommendations, and behavioral strategies.
Regular follow-up appointments keep your plan on track. As your body changes and your labs improve, your plan is updated to reflect where you are — not where you started.
The goal isn't just hitting a target weight. Our counselors work with you to build habits and understanding that support maintaining your results long after the active program ends.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
A: No. We work with patients across a wide range of starting points. If you're struggling to lose weight despite consistent effort, or if weight-related health concerns are affecting your quality of life, you're a good candidate for evaluation.
A: Yes, when properly monitored. All medications used in our program are FDA-approved and prescribed based on your individual health profile. We monitor your response closely and adjust as needed. This is very different from over-the-counter supplements, which have no clinical oversight.
A: Commercial programs offer behavioral tools and calorie guidance, which can be helpful for some people. What they can't do is evaluate your biology, identify metabolic or hormonal obstacles, or prescribe medications. Our program addresses those clinical factors directly.
A: It varies by individual. Most patients are in an active phase for several months, followed by a maintenance phase. We work with you for as long as needed to reach and sustain your goals.
A: Medical insurance is for mainstream medical needs like prescriptions for Lipitor, Boniva, or Prozac. Advanced help for weight loss, as we offer, isn’t typically covered by any medical insurance. In fact, we do not accept any medical insurance at our office. However, most of the bloodwork we order as well as meds we Rx at the pharmacy are typically covered by medical insurance.
