Adult ADHD, memory and brain fog

Adult ADHD evaluation, counselling for anxiety and depression, and work-up of memory complaints and brain fog in Lafayette, Indiana.

Cognitive symptoms have physical causes

Trouble concentrating, losing words, reading the same paragraph three times, forgetting why you walked into a room. Patients arrive frightened, having decided this is early dementia.

Usually it is not. Thyroid disease, B12 deficiency, low vitamin D, poor blood sugar control, sleep apnea, hormone changes and several very common prescriptions all produce exactly these symptoms.

Adult ADHD is also real, frequently undiagnosed, and worth evaluating properly. Both deserve a workup rather than a shrug.

ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The H is for hyperactivity, which most adults do not have — so for them we drop it and call it ADD. Adults with ADD are frequently anxious as well, and treatment of the ADD at the right dose almost always calms that anxiety too.

Why it is done this way

Reversible causes get excluded before anything is diagnosed

What we test

What we rule out first

Thyroid function

Hypothyroidism is one of the most common reversible causes of cognitive slowing.

B12 and folate

B12 deficiency causes memory loss and, left long enough, permanent neurological damage.

Blood sugar control

Insulin resistance affects cognition well before anyone calls it diabetes.

Hormone status

Both perimenopause and low testosterone cause genuine, measurable cognitive symptoms.

Sleep

Undiagnosed sleep apnea will imitate ADHD convincingly. It has to be excluded first.

Adult ADHD evaluation

Once the reversible causes are addressed, a proper assessment of what remains.

Anxiety, depression and mood

Individual counselling for adults, available on its own or alongside medical treatment.

In-house behavioural health

A licensed psychologist and a licensed therapist (LMHC) work in the same practice as the medical team, so the two sides of a problem are treated together.

How it works

How care works here

Functional medicine is not a different set of drugs. It is a different order of operations: measure first, then treat what the measurements actually show.

  1. 01

    Step 1

    1. A long first visit

We take a full history — symptoms, timeline, diet, sleep, stress, medications, family history. Most patients have never been asked these questions in one sitting. This is where the pattern usually shows up.

  2. 02

    Step 2

    2. Testing that goes past the standard panel

A normal thyroid panel is often just TSH. A normal hormone panel is often nothing at all. We test the full picture — thyroid antibodies, free hormones, nutrient status, inflammatory and metabolic markers — so the treatment plan has something real underneath it.

  3. 03

    Step 3

    3. A plan you understand

You get your results explained, not filed. What is out of range, what it means, what we are going to do about it, and what should change and by when.

  4. 04

    Step 4

    4. Re-test and adjust

We re-measure. If the numbers moved and you feel better, we hold. If they did not, we change the plan. Treating on symptoms alone is how people end up on therapy they do not need.

Who this is for

Cognitive symptoms almost always have something measurable underneath them.
  • Concentration and short-term memory changed noticeably within the last few years.
  • You have been told it is stress, or age, without anything being tested.
  • You suspect undiagnosed ADHD and want it assessed properly.
  • Brain fog arrived alongside fatigue, weight change or hormonal symptoms.
  • You are frightened it is dementia and want that addressed directly.

If none of that sounds like you, call anyway — we will tell you honestly whether this is the right service.

Common questions

Is there an adult ADHD doctor near me in Lafayette?
Innovative Medicine evaluates adult ADHD and cognitive symptoms in Lafayette, Indiana. Call (765) 471-1100.
Is my brain fog early dementia?
It is a reasonable fear and usually the wrong answer. Reversible metabolic, hormonal and nutrient causes are far more common, which is why we test for them first.
Can you treat memory loss?
Where there is a treatable cause, yes — and there very often is. Where the picture points to a neurological diagnosis, we say so and refer you appropriately.
Do you prescribe stimulants?
Where a proper evaluation supports the diagnosis, and after the reversible causes have been addressed.
How do I know if it is adult ADHD rather than anxiety or stress?
You often cannot tell from the outside, because anxiety, depression and ADHD produce symptoms that look alike. Telling them apart takes a full history, the pattern of symptoms over time, and ruling out the medical causes first. We do not diagnose off a single questionnaire.
Do I need a referral to see the therapist or psychologist?
No. Call the office on (765) 471-1100 and we will talk through what you are looking for and who in the practice fits.
Is counselling confidential?
Yes, under state and federal privacy law. Anything shared with the medical side of the practice is shared with your explicit consent, or where the law requires it.

Or ask us to call you

The office is open Monday to Thursday. Send this and someone will call you back — a sentence about what is going on is enough.

Please do not send personal health information through this form. We only need enough to call you back.

Get it looked at properly

Most cognitive complaints have a cause worth finding. Start with the testing.
